On 15 November, a
boat carrying 31 asylum seekers from Syria and Palestine capsized
between the
Ionian island of Lefkada and the western coasts of mainland Greece, leading to
the death 12 of them including four small children. These asylum seekers were
attempting to leave Greece for Italy.
The Greek Forum of Refugees expresses deep sorrow and concern for the
ongoing loss of life in and out of European Union border.
We believe that, until the European Union hesitates to create a
just and common functional and effective asylum system observing the fundamental
rights of human being, we will be the witnesses of such fatal incidents which
cost so many lives.Responsible for these tragedies are European Authorities
themselves.
Also three more people are still missing while fifteen have been rescued
so far and have been transferred to hospitals on
Lefkadaisland and the mainland city of Preveza.
